Auction Highlight: Summer 2020 Auction | NY State Stoneware
Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Horse and Jockey Decoration, Stamped "C.W. BRAUN / BUFFALO. N.Y.," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a horse with saddle and reins, ridden by a jockey with cap and mustache. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark and capacity mark. This crock is the first example of Braun stoneware that we have seen featuring a horse with rider. Among the finest examples of stoneware known by this desirable New York State maker. A series of long surface lines to left side of crock's front, continuing onto reverse. A Y-shaped surface line to tail area of horse, not visible on interior. A large X-shaped hairline below right handle, part of which is visible on interior. A chip to interior of rim. A tiny nick to exterior of rim on right side of crock. An in-the-firing scratch to clay near base on front, which is glazed over. H 12 1/2".
