Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "MOORE, NICHOLS & CO. / WILLIAMSPORT, PA," circa 1877-1879, ovoid jug with squared spout, decorated with a large stem bearing ten flowers of three different varieties, including tulips, daisies, and clover-shaped blossoms. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Featuring an impressive size, exuberant decoration, and superb color, this jug is the finest example bearing this scarce Central Pennsylvania maker's mark that we have ever offered. Excellent condition with an in-the-firing contact mark to right side and some staining to surface.
