Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK & CO. / LYONS", NY State origin, circa 1850, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an exuberant brushed design of tulips and daisies blossoming from a single plant, accented throughout with cobalt spots. Brushed "5" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Some staining and two small areas of light exfoliation to reverse. Heavy chipping to rim. Some fry to cobalt. A small chip to right handle. Two base chips. A glazed-over, in-the-firing iron ping near base to right of decoration. A thin 8" crack to far right side of reverse. A 3 1/2" in-the-firing line descending from the interior of the rim on the reverse, not visible on exterior. H 12".
