Rare Three-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration with Nashville, Tennessee Advertising, Stamped "E. FOWLER / BEAVER, PA", circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "FROM / SPIRE & DUFF. / NASHVILLE, TENN.", including five stars at the center. Cobalt foliate motifs to shoulder. Wide cobalt stripe below. Large brushed "3" to right of advertising. Decoration is applied over a slip-coated surface. Includes salt-glaze stoneware lid, stamped "3" and "4". A difficult-to-find example of Western PA stoneware made for the Southern market. A tight fork-shaped crack in underside, continuing onto base in four places. A 1 5/8" chipped area to left handle. A chip to right handle. A chip to interior of rim. A small chip to tip of finial on lid. Jar does not sit perfectly flat.
