Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "1851", attributed to Thomas R. Waddell, Alleghany County, VA, circa 1851, ovoid jar with tooled spout and applied lug handles, decorated on one side with the slip-trailed date, "1851", above a script "2" within a stylized, slip-trailed flower. Reverse decorated with a boldly-brushed flower featuring a circular, open-centered blossom. Among the finest-decorated Waddell pieces that we have ever offered. Two chips to exterior of rim. One small chip to interior of rim. Traces of old red and white paint to surface.
