Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Clover Decoration, Stamped "MILLER & DAVISON / STRASBURG, VA.," circa 1880, ovoid pitcher with flared base and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a double-stemmed clover plant extending up the front and swags flanking the spout. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed on the collar with the large, short-lived maker's mark of partners, George W. Miller and George Henry Davidson. Pieces made at this partnership, as well as the firm of Kenner, Davidson, and Miller, used distinctive clover motifs based upon Davidson's Baltimore training. This work is noteworthy for combining a number of desirable attributes: form, maker's mark, decoration, and size. A fork-shaped crack on underside, extending 5 1/4" up side of pitcher, where it forms a Y. Three base chips. A few tiny nicks to thin molding at base of collar. H 9 3/8".
