Unusual One-Gallon Stoneware Advertising Syrup Jug, NY State origin, circa 1875, squat-shaped jug with wide, pinched pouring spout, featuring the cobalt inscription, "Ret.. to / Fairweather." This jug would have held contents sold by a merchant, J.H. Fairweather, to whom it was meant to be returned, probably to claim a deposit. Light wear to rim. A minor inverted U-shaped line to rim on reverse. Some staining.
