Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped Twice "SOLOMON BELL", Winchester, VA origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and large extruded handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a series of graduated vertical stripes descending from a horizontal stripe. Impressed on shoulder twice with the maker's mark, "SOLOMON BELL", used during Solomon Bell's early tenure in Winchester, VA, prior to the establishment of his long-standing Strasburg, VA shop. Pieces bearing this stamp are underrated in rarity, and the double impression of the stamp on this example is unusual. Its cobalt decoration is the same as that seen on a pitcher bearing the same early-period mark, sold as lot 285 in Crocker Farm's November 3, 2018 auction. Excellent condition with a tiny rim chip, very minor rim wear, a glazed-over dent to one handle, and a tiny glazed-over base nick.
