Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "W.H. LEHEW & Co. / STRASBURG VA.", circa 1870, ovoid pitcher with flared collar and heavily-tooled rim, decorated around the midsection with brushed leafy stems culminating in unusual dashed flower blossoms. Collar decorated on each side with brushed swag motifs, one including additional dashed brushwork. Spout decorated with large brushed dashes. Circular cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Front of pitcher impressed with William H. Lehew maker's mark above a one-gallon capacity mark. The first example of Lehew stoneware that we have offered featuring this particular floral design. A 3/4" surface crack from rim, not visible on interior. Some light wear to decorated area of spout. A short, thin fork-shaped crack on underside, extending 5 1/2" up side of pitcher, where it forms a Y.
