Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "HUDSON N.Y. POTTERY", Benjamin Wolford at the Hudson, New York stoneware manufactory of Amos S. Hover and Charles Fingar, circa 1870, cylindrical jug, decorated with a very large, slip-trailed design of a pheasant perched atop a tree stump, surrounded by shrubs at its base. Excellent detail to bird, including a ringed neck, crested head, spotted and striped body, and long tail. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A crisply-executed design of monumental size, measuring 12 1/2" tall. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in a New England collection. Excellent condition. Small chips to spout. Spout slightly slumped.
