Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "A.E. SMITH & SONS, / MANUFACTURERS, /38 Peck Slip, N.Y.", circa 1855, large-sized, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a drooping flower with stylized, looping blossom. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Some fry to cobalt. A 3 1/2" area of tight surface lines under one handle, not visible on interior, above a small in-the-firing iron ping. An approximately 3" inverted Y-shaped surface to shoulder on front, not visible on interior. An approximately 3" spider line to reverse, not visible on interior. A minor in-the-firing iron ping to reverse. A few minor in-the-firing surface chips to underside.
