Rare and Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration and Impressed House Motifs, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1855, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and flattened rim, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed design of flowers emanating from a central stem. Shoulder area decorated with three short, wavy strokes of cobalt. Impressed below the tooled banding with two detailed house-and-tree motifs flanking a one-gallon capacity mark. The decoration, color, and form of this jar indicate it is an earlier-period product of the Thompson family. Of interesting note is the capacity mark, which is stylistically different than those commonly used by this family. An appealing example of West Virginia stoneware in all respects. Excellent condition with a thin, shallow 1 1/4" chip to bottom edge of rim.
