Scarce Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Stenciled Advertising, Stenciled "E.J. MILLER, & SON. / ALEXANDRIA. VA.", circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, the front featuring the elaborate stenciled advertising, "E.J. MILLER, & SON. / IMPORTERS & WHOLESALE / DEALERS IN / QUEENSWARE. / CHINA. GLASSWARE AND / HOUSE FURNISHING GOODS / NO. 65 KING ST. / ALEXANDRIA. VA.". Stenciled rising sun motif to body. Shoulder with freehand straight and wavy stripes. Base with freehand stripe below a freehand "4" flanked by flourishes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Elisha Janney Miller advertising pieces of this elaborate style are unusual. Very nice condition with a very faint 3 1/4" line at base, continuing 1 1/4" onto underside. Some fry to cobalt. Small chips to one handle. Minor wear to opposite handle. A faint 6 1/2" vertical line to body of reverse.
