Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. & L.E. MEEKER / SUCCASUNNY, NJ", second quarter 19th century, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated on the front with a split-stemmed foliate motif flanking the capacity mark. Brushed cobalt highlights to capacity mark and handle terminals. Succasunny, NJ, now referred to as Succasunna, is located in Morris County's Roxbury Township. This jar is one of a very few signed examples known from this pottery. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. An approximately 3 1/4" x 2 1/4" filled area to underside. Tight cracks to underside, extending partway up body of jar.
