Three-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Drape Decoration, New Jersey origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on one side with a drape-and-X motif and on the reverse with a drape-and-spot motif underscored by stripes. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Crazing to surface at base. A small glazed-over rim chip and small post-firing rim chip. Some firing flaws to surface, including a 3/4" in-the-firing crack to rim, a 7/8" iron ping to shoulder, and a 1" in-the-firing contact mark to reverse.
