One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Cake Crock with Lid, attributed to R.J. Grier, Chester County, PA, circa 1880, wide, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with drooping floral motifs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Includes original raised-top lid with swag decoration around the edge and cobalt surrounding the knob. Desirable form. Crock with shallow chips to one handle and a small chip to opposite handle, an approximately 4" faint line from rim, a bloated spot to rim on one side, and a tiny bloated spot below it. Lid in excellent condition with expected light wear to underside and a minor chip to flange on underside.
