Scarce Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware PICKLES Jar, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK", early 19th century, highly-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and narrow opening with flared rim, featuring the large impressed word, "PICKLES", surrounded by cobalt dashes. Reverse impressed with Clarkson Crolius, Sr. maker's mark, also surrounded by a dashed cobalt slip border. A desirable Crolius form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in Western MD. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minor, in-the-firing contact mark near base and some small raised spots in clay. H 9 3/4".
