Scarce Shenandoah Valley Multi-Glazed Redware Cuspidor, Stamped "S. BELL & SON / STRASBURG", VA origin, circa 1890, semi-ovoid form with tooled midsection and tall, flaring collar, the surface dipped in cream-colored slip and decorated with streaks of copper and manganese under a clear lead glaze. Lightly-stamped along the collar, "S. BELL & SON / STRASBURG". This form is rarer than Strasburg's other spittoon form, which features a recessed top, and is difficult to find bearing a maker's mark. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example, consigned from Illinois. Chips and wear around rim. Some spots of glaze loss and scratches to body. H 6 1/2" ; Diameter (across base) 7".
