Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Presentation Preserve Jar, Inscribed "Peach" and Initialed "RMC", New York State origin, circa 1810, cylindrical jar with tapered shoulder and applied lug handles, featuring the finely-incised inscription, "Peach", on the front, and the initials, "RMC", on the reverse. Cobalt highlights to incising. This example is related to a small number of other cylindrical preserve jars each bearing incised initials on the reverse ending in the letter "C". While previously believed to be of Manhattan (specifically Crolius family) origin, new research suggests these fruit jars were made somewhere north of the city in upstate New York. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a glazed-over base chip and a very minor base nick. H 10".
