Rare Stoneware African-American Figural Jug, probably Alabama origin, late 19th century, wheel-thrown jug in the form of an African-American man with applied facial features and buttoned coat, the surface covered in a thick, reddish-brown glaze. Head features heavily-incised hair and lamb-chop sideburns, and a slightly-open mouth revealing two clay teeth. Sgraffito carving forms the figure's eyes, accents a shirt button below the figure's chin, and the top button of his coat. An original pouring hole is fashioned in the top of the figure's head. Outstanding form with strong folk art appeal. Excellent condition with a chip to each ear. H 7 5/8".
