Rare Ten-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Bold Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "A & W BOUGHNER / GREENSBORO / PA", circa 1860, large-sized, cylindrical jar with combed midsection, tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, the shoulder decorated with large leaves flanking the maker's mark, above an undulating vine bearing a classic Boughner tulip motif. Thick freehand stripes to shoulder, midsection, and base. Base with freehand "10". Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Exceptional size, strong decoration, and desirable maker's mark. Provenance: Collection of Lorren Lambert, Staunton, VA. Restored cracks throughout with some very minor touch-up to one stem of leaf at shoulder. A very minor chip to end of one handle. H 20".
