Auction Highlight: March 24, 2018 Auction | Central PA Stoneware
Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Exuberant Cobalt Peahen-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a brushed design of a bird with long tail, detailed crest, and profuse feather detail to body and tail, standing on a heavily-shaded stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Featuring the distinctive crest and long tail of a peacock, but lacking the typical "eyes" in the tail, this design likely represents a peahen. It features the most elaborate feather detail that we have seen on a Cowden bird motif. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor approximately forty years ago. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with an in-the-firing contact mark to base area over stump, a 1 1/4" in-the-firing surface chip to side of jug near base, a tiny nick to side of spout, and some staining to reverse. H 13 1/4".
