Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT.", circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Restoration to rim. A chip and a few minor nicks to interior of rim. A small area of light exfoliation above one handle on reverse. A sealed, approximately 4" hairline from rim on front, not touching decoration.
