Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "PENN YAN", New York State origin, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with applied lug handles and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large flower plant design featuring two blossoms with heavily-shaded interiors, petals, and leaves. Slip-trailed "4" to shoulder. Slip-trailed highlight to maker's mark. A 2 1/4" surface line on underside, continuing 1 3/8" onto base, not visible on interior. A 4 1/2" hairline from rim on front. A few short, minor surface lines to shoulder area on reverse, not visible on interior. A 1 5/8" area of shallow, in-the-firing chipping to top edge of rim on reverse. A minor, in-the-firing iron pings to surfaces.
