Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Presentation Jug with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Inscribed "R.C. willis / South Street", Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1823-26, one-gallon ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with a large brushed foliate motif on the shoulder and highlights to the handle terminals. Incised under the handle with the cobalt-highlighted inscription "R.C. willis / South Street". R.C. Willis shows up as a merchant trading out of 88 South Street in Lower Manhattan in New York City directories from 1823 to 1826. Manhattan stoneware pieces with hand-incised inscriptions are considered highly unusual. Provenance: Property of a New York State collector. Base chips, mostly small. Otherwise excellent condition. H 11 1/2".
