Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Cow Decoration, Stamped "POTTERY WORKS / LITTLE WST 12TH ST N.Y.", William Macquoid, New York, New York, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large brushed design of a cow with horns, udder, and heavily-detailed body, walking atop a grassy pasture with bush to the animal's right. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Desirable subject matter with strong folk art appeal. Provenance: Robert Meltzer Collection. A 4 3/4" hairline from rim on reverse. A 1 1/2" hairline from rim on right side of crock's front. Some shallow chipping to interior of rim. A minor chip to exterior of rim. A small, smooth in-the-firing chip to left handle, which is glazed-over, and a second very minor nick to same handle. A large Y-shaped surface line to underside, not visible on the interior and possibly in-the-firing. H 11".
