Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Vertical Handles and Cobalt Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, late 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and ribbed vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a stylized brushed floral motif. While this jar's maker is unknown, its decoration is based upon incised motifs found on late 18th and early 19th century Manhattan stoneware, most notably Thomas Commeraw pieces bearing the elusive mark, "COERLEARS HOOK". Excellent size and form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. A Y-shaped crack on underside, continuing 5 1/4" up front of jar. H 7 3/4".
