Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Quail Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER N.Y.", circa 1885, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, featuring a slip-trailed design of a quail with turned head, crest, and heavily-spotted body, perched on a leafy plant. Slip-trailed number "5" above. Light cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A desirable John Burger, Jr. motif. Significant restoration to surface to right of decoration, continuing around to right side of crock. Additional painted restoration to right handle. Some fry to cobalt. Hairlines to reverse.
