Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to R.J. Grier, Chester County, PA, circa 1860, ovoid jar with applied lug handles and tooled accents to shoulder and rim, lavishly-decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed two-stemmed tulip motif. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Wavy stripe of cobalt below each handle. One of the finest examples of Grier floral decoration we have ever offered. Provenance: David Musser Collection. Very nice as-made condition with the following in-the-firing flaws: a 3/4" surface flake/contact mark near base, a few bloated spots to surface, an in-the-firing chip to interior of rim, and slumping to rim on one side.
