Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped and Stenciled "S. JOHNSTON, / & SON. / BEAVER, PA.", circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and pronounced rim, decorated with freehand tulips and foliate motifs surrounding the stenciled signature, "S. JOHNSTON, / & SON. / BEAVER, PA.". Additional impressed with S. Johnston & Son maker's mark at shoulder. Minor chips to interior of rim. A 1 1/4" in-the-firing base chip and two other very minor base chips. Some staining.
