Rare and Fine Large-Sized Stoneware Canning Jar with Cobalt Freehand and Stenciled Shield Decoration, attributed to Stephen H. Ward, West Brownsville, PA, circa 1870, tapered jar with tooled shoulder and semi-squared wax sealer rim, decorated with an elaborate stenciled Federal shield motif flanked by freehand dashes. Decorated above with freehand stripes and dashes and at the base with a thick, wavy stripe. Excellent decoration and highly-desirable maker. Chips to exterior of rim. Heavy chipping to interior of rim. Heavy chipping to inner wax sealer rim. H 10 3/8".
