Rare Two-and-a-Half-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Alkaline Glaze, Stamped "DS" and "2 1/2", Daniel Seagle, Lincoln County, North Carolina, circa 1840, ovoid jar with arching tab handles and narrow, semi-rounded mouth, the surface covered in a dark-green alkaline glaze. Impressed "DS" on top of one handle and "2 1/2" on top of opposite handle. Includes an antique, alkaline-glazed lid with semi-rounded knob, possibly original to the piece. This jar's narrow-mouthed form is rarely-seen in Seagle's work. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from the Southeastern U.S. Jar in difficult-to-find, excellent condition with minor surface wear. Shallow chipping to edge of lid. H (including lid) 13".
