Very Rare Shenandoah Valley Green-Glazed Redware Cup, Stamped "S. BELL & SON / STRASBURG", Virginia origin, circa 1890, large-sized cup with footed base, extruded handle, and incised sine-wave decoration around shoulder, the exterior covered in a colorful mottled green glaze composed of whitish slip augmented with copper-oxide, covered in a clear lead glaze. Interior covered in a light copper glaze over orange clay. Impressed with "S. BELL & SON" maker's mark at shoulder. An exceptionally rare form from the Bells' Strasburg shop and one of only two examples we have ever offered, the other being a cream-glazed cup sold in our May 20, 2006 auction. This cup is the first of this form we have seen entirely glazed with copper. Very nice overall condition. Wear to rim. Wear and some shallow chipping to handle. A 3 1/2" crack from rim on side of cup. A faint 1 1/4" line to underside, which does not appear to extend through to interior. Minor wear to interior base. A small in-the-firing contact mark to body. H 5" ; Diameter (across top) 5 1/4".
