Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Grapes Motif, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO / PA", circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled grapes motif above a geometric design and James Hamilton maker's stenciling. Freehand stripes to shoulder and base. Stenciled number 5 flanked by stenciled leaves at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Incised "X" on underside. Reverse with a 1 3/8" rim chip and a 3" thin crack from rim. Two small handle chips. Some light wear to surface.
