Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Bird-on-Floral Decoration, New York State origin, possibly Albany, circa 1825, ovoid jar with tooled collar and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a crested bird perched on a flower. Heavy incised feather detail to birds' bodies. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Incised under one handle with two slashes surrounded by a circle. Although the form and color are somewhat different than Albany pieces from this period, the distinctive bird decoration is closely-related to the work of Moses Tyler of Albany. Restored Y-shaped crack in underside, connecting to a 9" crack, which extends up side of jar under one handle. Small rim chips. A minor base nick. H 13 1/2".
