Rare Cold-Painted Redware Vase, Stamped "SPEESE & SON / GETTYSBURG, PA", circa 1885, ovoid-bodied base with tall flaring neck and squared handle, the surface featuring a cold-painted scene of birds perched in a dogwood tree. Underside impressed with "Speese & Son" maker's mark beside an impressed number 30. An unusually-modern form, inspired by art pottery. While the painted scene is old, it is unknown whether this decoration was executed at the pottery or by a later owner. Reglued handle. A small rim chip and minor rim nicks. Scratches to interior. Flecks of paint loss to surface. Typical paint wear to bottom edge. H 7 1/2".
