Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "O.L. & A.K. BALLARD. / BURLINGTON, VT", circa 1860, cylindrical jug with pronounced spout, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a bird with long tail and well-detailed body, perched on a stylized branch. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark. The bird decoration includes purplish flecks throughout and may have a small concentration of manganese mixed into the cobalt slip. A 2" U-shaped crack at base. A small chip on exterior of spout adjacent to a 1 1/4" crack on top of spout. A small chip on interior of spout.
