Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Flower Blossom Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK & CO. / LYONS", New York State origin, circa 1845, large-sized, highly-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large brushed design of a flower blossom embellished with heavy spotting to the petals and center as well as additional foliate brushwork emanating from the border. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Potted in a robust, ovoid form of exceptional size, this jug features one of the finest floral motifs we have offered on a piece of stoneware produced at Nathan Clark's Lyons operation. The size, shape, and bold decoration combine to produce a striking jug with strong folk art appeal. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some light staining and an in-the-firing contact mark near base. H 19".
