Scarce Half-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Decoration, Manhattan, NY or Cheesequake, NJ origin, fourth quarter 18th century, ovoid form with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and vertically-oriented loop handle, decorated on one side with a brushed foliate motif and on the opposite side with a brushed drape motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable size and form. Very nice condition, particularly when considering its age. Nicks to interior and exterior of rim. A horizontal hairline to one lower handle terminal. Two shallow chips to underside at edge. Some exfoliation to underside. H 6 3/4".
