Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Quail and Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.", circa 1885, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a quail with crest, turned head, and heavily-spotted body, standing on a stylized ground beside a flower. Slip-trailed "6" to shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Crudely-filled flakes to front, not affecting decoration. Some fry to cobalt. A 7" crack from rim on right side of crock's front. A small rim chip.
