Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt House Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNIGTON VT", circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a house on a hill, the background featuring a split-rail fence and pine tree, the foreground additionally decorated with a fence. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. A popular Norton design. Significant restoration to jar below decoration, to the left and right sides, and to the reverse. A large spider crack on reverse, extending onto underside. Flakes to reverse. A short, glazed-over separation in rim on reverse. A tight spider line to right of tree on front.
