Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Stripe Decoration, Stenciled "Samuel Booker / Louisville, Ky.", Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, the front profusely-decorated with straight and wavy freehand stripes above and below the stenciled advertising, "Samuel Booker / Louisville, Ky.". Additional graduated vertical stripes flank the stenciled inscription. Jar is further decorated below with a freehand number "2" flanked by freehand stripes and underscored by a long stripe at base. An exuberantly-decorated example of Western PA stoneware, combining the region's iconic stripe motifs with appealing Kentucky advertising. This jar typifies the extravagant style of Greensboro's best decorators, as only a small amount space on the front has been left undecorated. Very nice condition with some small chips to shoulder molding and typical wear to inner edge of rim.
