Extremely Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Federal Eagle Decoration, Stenciled "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "A. BOOTH", Western PA origin, circa 1865, ovoid jug with heavily-footed base, rounded spout, and ribbed handle, decorated with a brushed design of a Federal eagle clutching olive branches and arrows, below the stenciled inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Midsection inscribed in large stenciled letters, "A. BOOTH". Decorated below with an undulating vine bearing flowers and leaves in the Western PA style. Cobalt highlights to spout and handle terminals. Impressed with large one-and-a-half-gallon capacity mark below spout. This jug is exceptionally rare in its freehand depiction of an eagle and stenciled inscription above. It is the first of its kind we have seen. Shallow chipping to base. A small flake to spout. Some light surface wear. H 12 1/2".
