Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Star Decoration, Dated 1872, Stamped "BROWN BROTHER / HUNTINGTON / L.I.", 1872, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, decorated with five slip-trailed stars and the date "1872" flanked by vines. This jug is the only example of Brown Brothers stoneware we have seen decorated in this manner. Any pieces produced at this pottery that feature designs other than floral motifs are considered highly unusual. This dated and star-decorated example is one of the finest examples of Brown Brothers stoneware to come to auction in recent years. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Some light wear to cobalt. A few small spout chips. Bottom edge with a small chip and some tiny nicks. H 15 1/2".
