Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Profuse Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "J.B. CAIRE & CO. / POUGHKEEPSIE NY", circa 1842-1843, keg-form cooler with tooled banding and unusually-formed bung hole with squared base and arched top, decorated across the shoulder and base with a slip-trailed daisy and leaf design, and across the midsection with a scalloped drape motif. Slip-trailed number 3 at midsection. Heavy cobalt dashes encompass the bung hole. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Desirable form with striking color and decoration. Relatively few Caire family water coolers produced in Poughkeepsie are known. Three rim chips, the largest measuring 1 1/8". Some additional tiny rim nicks and a minor chip to base. H 12".
