Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt "Butter Pot" Inscription, Northeastern U.S. origin, Dated 1839, tapered crock with applied lug handles and tooling to shoulder and rim, the front featuring the slip-trailed inscription "4 Gal Butter Pot / Cool Butter / 1839". Excellent inscription indicating the piece's use. Long crack from rim on right side of crock's front. Additional tight cracks and surface lines throughout crock, much of which appears to be in-the-making. A rim chip on reverse. A small chip to interior of rim. A small chip to one handle.
