Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration and 1874 Date, Stamped "BROWN BROTHER , / HUNTINGTON, / L.I.", 1874, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a horizontal flower extending from a curved stem, above the brushed date "1874". Dated examples from this pottery are considered unusual. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Literature: Illustrated on p. 42, fig. 44 of USEFUL ART: LONG ISLAND POTTERY, Cynthia Arps Corbett, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. Of this piece, the author notes "Ocassionally pieces as those seen above with dates and names were produced for special order (Corbett, p. 42). A long in-the-firing crack from rim on reverse. A 2 3/4" inverted Y-shaped line from rim on front, not visible on exterior.
