Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Incised Foliate Decoration, Stamped "SWAN & STATES / STONINGTON," Connecticut origin, circa 1825, cylindrical form with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and rounded lug handles, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design on the front and reverse. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Visually-appealing form and well-executed decoration, reminiscent of early designs by the Crolius family of Manhattan, New York. Provenance: Found decades ago in the northeastern U.S. A 1 1/4" rim chip. A very shallow flake off of underside, which appears to be in-the-firing. A few very minor base chips.
