Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "R", attributed to Henry Harrison or Richard Clinton Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1865, cylindrical crock with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, ribbed lug handles, and tall flaring collar, decorated on the front and reverse with a large double-stemmed tulip plant in the classic Remmey style. Brushed wavy line decoration at shoulder on both sides. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and a wavy line under each handle. Impressed "5" under one handle beside a highly-unusual incised or impressed "R", presumably for "Remmey". Churns are one of the more unusual forms from the Remmeys of Philadelphia, and few examples of this large size are known. Two shallow chips to one handle. 1" chip to opposite handle. Rim chips. Hairlines on underside, continuing onto base. A few small base chips.
