Very Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "H LEWIS. / HUNTINGTON / L.I.," New York State, circa 1830-1854, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large brushed tulip design on the reverse. Cobalt highlights to the maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. An elusive maker's mark used by Henry Lewis after Matthew Gardiner left the operation. Excellent form and decoration. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Literature: Pictured and discussed on p. 38 of USEFUL ART: LONG ISLAND POTTERY, Cynthia Arps Corbett, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. Two professionally-restored rim chips and a few minor, in-the-firing flaws.
